WHY WE ALL NEED MORE ADVENTURE IN OUR LIVES

WHY WE ALL NEED MORE ADVENTURE IN OUR LIVES

More often than not the day to day responsibilities of life, work and family can put you in a grey coma of existence and slowly eat away at your passion for adventure and life. Here are some tips on how to reignite that sense of excitement and wake up to get more adventure back into your life.

FIRST THING IS TO ASK YOURSELF WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL ALIVE AND GO GET IT

I am packed and ready. All that’s left to do is to go over my checklist a final time, load the car up and hit the road.

I am driving to Mullaghmore harbour in Sligo for a night time scuba dive with three friends. If you aren’t familiar with scuba night diving check it out on Google images, you get an equal amount of nervous fear and excitement at the same time. It’s such a rush just as you enter the darkest blue water, night diving is a very surreal experience.  (Careful it might peak your interest and get you motivated to head to the to your nearest scuba club).

The idea for this trip began as a conversation on the phone with one of my mates after watching footage from David Attenboroughs Planet Earth II.  Seeing the untamed underwater wilderness in “Planet Earth II” really reignited that fire in me to get back into the water for a dive. So I put it on the calendar invited some other capable pals and got about getting it done.

What I haven’t told you is that it has probably been about 4 years since I dived on a scuba trip of this caliber. For someone as passionate about the outdoors and spending time in the water, this is an insane amount of time. (Note this doesn’t mean I haven’t still had adventures here and there, but many things that I once enjoyed became shelved.)

What happened? The same thing that happens to us all; LIFE.

I continually signed up for additional educational courses, got disconnected from my friends, got on with my job, worked ridiculous hours, started my own business, worked more ridiculous hours. The work got easier, but I filled what little extra time I had with my wife and child.

You could literally cut and paste this to just about anyone reading this and they could pen it for their lives’ and it would be spot on. Somewhere in all that “life” we lose our opportunity for adventure and bold living (if even for a weekend).

Now, I didn’t say we lose our sense of adventure, I believe that stays with us, but simply gets repressed overtime.

SO HOW DO WE GET MORE ADVENTURE INTO OUR LIVES?

STEP 1: FIND SOMETHING THAT IGNITES YOU

Pick something that gets you going and all fired up. Pick something you used to do or always wanted to do, or have just discovered that you would like to do. It can be anything from backpacking to going to see your favorite band, to a fishing trip or a trip to a different city.

Perhaps it is a 3-5 day yoga retreat or mobility workshop or some retail therapy you’ve been mulling over for months.

It doesn’t really matter what it is, only that it is YOUR adventure.

STEP 2: SCHEDULE IT

Put it in the calendar.

I am a huge fan of setting count downs by writing plans and things into a calendar and sticking to them. We have an annual camping trip with family that is always over some summers weekend. As soon as we get home from it each year we set dates for the next year. Putting events on the calendar holds you accountable to follow through on them.

Also, a calendar is meant for planning so somewhere in between my daughters drama practice, swimming, dance, youth groups, birthday parties, meetings, etc.,  take a forced break by blocking out a couple of days or longer for your adventure. You will find that this hits the brakes on life and allows you to slow down and breathe.

STEP 3: DO IT

Go! Get excited and allow yourself to actually go and enjoy and take it all in. Make some memories and collect some experiences you would not otherwise get during your day to day routine. Break away for a little while and learn a little about yourself and life!

As always, we want you all to be as fully AWAKE and ALIVE as possible. Live well, train hard and remember that strength is an attitude so live life to the fullest.
