Finding self belief, confidence and igniting that something within

“I’ve got a lot of things on” “I’ve just too many things on right now” “Things” it’s a boundless, unequalable word that’s never really fully understood. In most cases, it is used to describe our paraphernalia or material possessions. Crap we have accumulated but have little regard for,

BUT sometimes “Things” can be more. People refer to it as that “some-thing” “that person has it”, “he/she has that something!” “That something to make it big, to make something happen”. That “something” could be a burning ambition to reach your personal best while training, competing in sport or it can be an unprecedented sense of urgency to make everyday count.

In the last 6 weeks, I have had the privilege to witness numerous displays of just this type of something, those individuals on the Storm 300 challenge put their potential and abilities on display unbeknownst to themselves and it was nothing but inspiring. That is what we call “the minerals” at Storm Body Fitness and you know what? You all have it inside of you and I’m going to tell you the simple ways to find it.

You gotta ask yourself one question, Have you got the minerals?

YOU need to call YOU out

I’m constantly teaching here in Storm Body Fitness rationalism and philosophies of how to set your goals and then continue to strive to the next level or how to manage your stress and not allow it to have an affect on your nutrition, if we eat better we train better. For me it’s very important we answer the main question honestly, “Have you got the minerals” in other words “are you ready to go” because basically it can mean one or all of the above, depending on the situation.

How do we start?

YOU need to call YOU out. We all lead busy complicated lives, we all have the odd aches, pains and strains, and believe me there are a lot of times when I don’t feel like working or training just like everyone else. Some days it just feels like going through the motions, like I’m just punching the card but you know what that’s OK because not every training session has to end on a massive high or a PB (personal best), some days it’s OK just to punch your card but the important thing is, you did just that, you punched that card. You didn’t skip training and a “going through the motions” training session is better than a no training session.

There are times I’m honestly exhausted when I get home from work, but I still make time to chat and play with my daughter and ask about her day because you can’t make EXCUSES. You have to find the courage and conviction to act differently to how you feel, this is one of the best bits of advice I think I can offer.

Let’s be very clear and honest here, it isn’t easy but nothing worth having is meant to be easy if it was we wouldn’t put such a high value on it in the first place. We live in a time, I’d describe as possibly being the ultimate convenience, this doesn’t help the situation because it promotes or teaches the “if its hard and makes us uncomfortable give up and move on” attitude if it doesn’t fit the penultimate comfort zone it has no place. but I think John Keats said it best when he said:

“I was never afraid of failure, for I would sooner fail than not be among the best.”

The ability to strike out and continue to persevere is crucial to achieving your goals and achieving something amazing. That something amazing remember, only needs to be relevant to you, it’s not necessarily life changing for anyone else but then we don’t need it to be.

The giant sequoia tree is one of the world’s most impressive trees with a height on average of 87 m and an estimated age of 1800–2700 years old which makes it amongst the tallest, widest and arguably longest-lived of all organisms on Earth. So to put it in perspective, if you could answer our question of “Have you go the minerals” for lets say, everyday of 6 months, I promise you that you’d shine and then you’d know that you have that “something.”  Imagine if you accepted that knowledge and knowing its true power and potential imagine what you’d achieve in 5,10 or 20 years.

Find something to believe in

Another great method is to take stock or evaluate yourself. Ask yourself questions like, what are my real values? What do I stand for? What makes me smile? What makes me happy? Where am I going? Do I like myself? In my perfect world what would I change now about me? And trust me take your time to think about them and be frank with yourself. Write the answers down but before you do be completely honest don’t write a generic answer that you think “should” be the right answer, why? because there are no right or wrong answers and when you accept this you’ll see results . If your like most Irish people and your honest, you’ll probably be feeling guilty or a sense of feeling greedy or self indulgent as you write your answers but don’t worry, I’m telling you now, you don’t have to be. In this instance it’s ok to be as self indulgent as you can possibly be.

If you are going to be happy and make any kind of plans for significant change then you first have to know who you are. It is so sad how many people don’t know what they really want or what they stand for, these people allow others to decide or dictate to them because of a need for social acceptance or lack of honesty with themselves. It kind of boils down to that old saying “if he/she put ones hand in the fire would you follow” or put another way “just because he/she said it was cool to put your hand in the fire would you?”

Don’t be one of these people, don’t fall into this trap. Explore different options and find YOUR passions instead of adopting others as your own, trust me life is short enough and has a great way of sneaking up on you, so don’t let anyone tell you your not capable of achieving something. Find a team or a place that shares the same or similar passions. There is nothing more exciting or satisfying than pursuing one’s passion, except maybe watching someone else accomplish “something” special.

People tend to make the mistake of spending their lives trying to master something, when it isn’t the final accomplishment of the mastery that’s the reward, it’s the journey. I’m sure if you asked any of the lads on the 300 challenge “what were the most memorable highlights or moments of the 6 weeks of training they’d answer “it was watching one of the others achieve something for the first time or the hardship of the training they endured and shared together and they’d never mention their own PB achievements. So try not to be bitter just because you are unsure of yourself or what you stand for. You’ll never recognize anything amazing in yourself or know your true beauty if you are too busy sulking, blaming or listening to others telling you where you are in life.

Leap into the unknown

You gota take risks! You will never find happiness if you can’t find a way to love, forgive and relate to yourself first and you’ll never confront your fears if your too scared to take that first step. However life challenges you and it will, all the time, big and small never be afraid to meet it head on!

Muhammad Ali is generally considered among the greatest heavyweights of all time. The mans abilities in the ring were only ever overshadowed by the values he exemplified outside of it, fighting for racial justice, religious acceptance and above all the triumph of principle over expedience. You have to appreciate the relentless effort and courage he had facing failure so many times and still winding up on top. He never gave up… he never gave up his convictions or true self belief even in his darkest moments when they continuously tried to break him down from all angles, he remained steadfast and strong even if he wasn’t on the inside.

It’s no different to a client training here at Storm body fitness for the first time who starts of feeling embarrassed, but finds the courage to go out on a limb and try. If you can find the courage to admit to yourself that you can be better than your best excuse and then embark with relentless effort, I guarantee you will produce “something” magical!

“Something” is a word that is used in many different ways, but here at Storm body fitness we believe that YOU are all capable of great things.  It’s all about unleashing that “Something.” and proving to yourself that you have the minerals. If you want to be able to do something great, then you have to find courage, core values, and be willing to take risks.  Treat everything in your life you do as the best it can be at that time

CONCLUSION

Greatness comes from making every moment count; most people miss or give away their opportune “dare to be great” situations and moments too often because they’re just not prepared.  Focus on what you can control and then dismiss your ability to dwell on what you cant change. Be that person that would, in other circumstances inspire you to be better and then go and inspire others.  That is the kind of “something” that training in Storm body fitness is all about.

Now ask yourself again…Do you have the minerals?…
