One of the most common questions I’m asked by clients about the Paleo Diet is “Can I cheat?” or “What about this or that?” or something to this effect.

There really isn’t any real “cheating” were food is concerned, so this is where my 80/20 rule comes into play. This simply states that you will get 99% of the benefits of the Paleo Diet if you adhere to it 80% of the time.

Simple as that.

Going to a social gathering and being tempted by a desert or something non-paleo? If you really want to eat some dessert or bread or some other grain based dish, I’d say go for it. As long as it doesn’t upset your stomach and as long as you don’t make a habit of it.

I would also make sure your 80/20 is exactly that and not 70/30 or 50/50 or worse. Life is too short to not enjoy all it has to offer.

Me personally? I like a healthy dose of homemade Tex Mex every now and then. Enchiladas with rice and beans, cheese, wraps, tortilla chips…

why not.

Hamburgers with buns?

Sometimes, just like everyone else I get tired of lettuce wraps and just want a good old fashioned hamburger. I’ve gotten to the point that my body will let me know if I cross that 20% boundary. I will feel like crap if I eat too much crap.

So enjoy your food, make the preparation and the consumption a social event rather than just sitting in front of the telly, and remember:

    • Make your nutrition easy
    • Make it fit your lifestyle
    • Don’t be hungry
    • Don’t make it over complicated
    • Don’t allow it to be boring

ask any of my clients who have had great nutritional success…

the key word is BALANCE
